Blurt!

Great Game Night Game!!

I'll admit that I know the inventor - but please don't let that stop you from reading my review! I'm also a game inventor, reviewer and overall game junkie...so I kind of know my stuff. :)

Knowing my affinity for games, Tim sent me a copy of his game BLURT! which arrived just in time for one of my many game nights. This particular game night was a little different since I had invited a lot of newbies and instead of making the selections myself I let the group choose. From a table stacked with fifty of my favorite games guests chose a nice mix of the classics and somewhat-unknowns like BLURT! While one party-goer did express concern for the children pictured on the back of the box, I assured them that Tim said it was a entertaining game for all ages, so a group of rowdy 20-30 somethings fit the bill.

One thing that is absolutely essential for a successful game-night offering is easy to communicate directions and it took about a minute to explain how to play BLURT! before we dove in. The premise is so easy - in fact, it almost seems too easy. A player reads a definition and the first person to guess the word moves forward a certain number of spaces. Well, even with quick definitions like "a person living in total solitude by choice" there was a flood of answers - right and wrong - all within a half second of each other. (The correct answer is "hermit.") The quick, all-play nature of the game really went over well and I can only imagine it plays just as nicely with a group of kids and teens. BLURT! includes directions for a more advanced play but also words for junior players ages 7-9.

Bravo Tim - loved this game. Can't believe it wasn't already part of my collection!!

Silliness!

There isn't any other game that I'd rather play. Wow, I realize that's a lot to live up to. The thing about Blurt is that you can go with all of the add-on directions or you can just stick to the heart of the game. read a clue and be the first to blurt out the word being described. Sounds easier than it is, but it truly is good exercise for your mind. Now if you're playing with a bunch of friends your age it can be all kinds of competitive silliness. What's so crazy is that it really can be fun for all ages. just like the box says, and that doesn't happen with just any board game. When I got my game, my 3½-year-old was so curious that my husband and I sat down and read a few definitions to him. Even he could come up with the answers for words like kitchen, shampoo, kitten, whisper, nap. so it was good practice and he learned a few new words along the way. So it's educational too? You bet it is. You couldn't ask for a better gift idea. Lastly, my number one favorite thing about the game. it's the name. Say it out loud. Blurt, Blurt, Blurt. Enough said. You should hear my little boy say it. Ah, it never gets old.

Great for a Family of Multiple Ages!

We owned this game when it was first introduced in the early 90s and are so excited to see it back... better than ever I might add. We played last night as a family. My husband and five year old daughter played on a team because she is not reading yet, but she was able to "blurt" many of the answers before the rest of us. Many of the games we own are more fun for one of the kids because the content is either geared to an older or younger child. Not with Blurt, it has a junior version built in so everyone can play together... it is an easily adjustable game play for all ages. Specifics we like about the game 1.)Young and old can play together and all have a blast 2.) There are a junior level and a higher level on each card so you can adjust for players throughout the game. 3.) There are two elements that can change who is winning at any momement - the one on one and challenge keeps the game moving and could give anyone a chance to get ahead and eventually win at anytime. My son (7) specifically said he liked it because he learned a word that he didn't know before: "flurry." You would think living in Wisconsin he might have known what flurry meant, but then again maybe we only get huge snow storms, not flurries.
