    Highly Recommend

I didn't think it was possible for LeapFrog to come out with a tech toy more comprehensive than the Explorer. Somehow they've outdone themselves with LeapPad. While we received one from LeapFrog for review purposes (all options are 100% my own), I plan to purchase a 2nd for Christmas for my daughter.

With the biggest, brightest screen yet and the built-in tilt sensor, it's apparent out of the box LeapPad is a winner. Tilt it and the pet goes sliding across the screen making the kids giggle. And while it's fun for them to take pictures and videos of themselves and their family and create an "All About Me" story featuring their favorite subject, LeapPad lives up to the educational expectations typical of a LeapFrog product. For example, the interactive books include three reading levels which automatically adjust as your child progresses.
Completely customizable, users can create a profile complete with a picture of themselves making even the home screen fun as they sign in by clicking on their own picture. The pad works both with fingers and a stylus, and luckily a stylus tether is included. On of my favorite features as an educator is "Pet Pad," and included app allowing users to play with and customize their pets. While some like "Flingo" are fun using the tilt sensor to fling your pet, "Trick Time" offers handwriting practice forcing small fingers to trace letters accurately before moving on.

I would absolutely recommend LeapPad for it's intended age group, 4-9 and look forward to having two (and avoiding arguments) and although I was provided a review product, I'm planning to purchase a 2nd for Christmas for the 2nd child!

    Leaping for LeapPad

I was lucky enough to receive a LeapPad free of charge for review on my blog, The Maven of Social Media.

My first impression of the LeapPad was how sturdy it felt in my hands. It felt beefy and sturdy without being too heavy. Considering how much it was going to get dropped in our house, this was important to me. I'm looking forward to investing in one of their Gel Skins when they are available in October for a little extra protection.
The 5" color touch screen is a great size (you can use the included stylus or your fingers) - bigger at 480x772 resolution than both the screen on our Explorer and my iPhone - but not as large as the iPad (can you imagine the costs if it was!?)

The LeapPad is ready to play right out of the box with Art Studio and Story Studio, the camera and video recorder, Pet Pad and a free app download! So you can pick it up with some batteries and go! Love!
All the Explorer games we bought last year are compatible with the LeapPad. Smart. The new Ultra eBooks are awesome! My son loves his Cars2 eBook! The cinematic book is engaging and fun. He loves to read, so I'm looking forward to getting him more eBooks! The games and apps available on the Explorer include lots of old favorites and new ones too, and are priced between $5-25. We'll get a few new favorites but we are good to go.

Another awesome thing about the LeapPad is that the camera and video recorder is incorporated right into it! No accessories to lose - a real plus! It's not a fancy camera, but for my 3 ½ year old, it's perfect. He gets an idea of how to use the camera and take photos and he loves that he can embellish them in the included Art Studio.

I love the educational spin on LeapFrogs games and apps and that I can check my son's progress with the Learning Path. It's so cool to hand him his LeapPad to let him play, and then later on see how well he's done solving a problem. This is especially important to me since my son has Autism, and sometimes things can be more challenging for him than his peers.

I'm a little bummed that there is no rechargeable internal battery pack for the LeapPad (yet I hope!!) like there is for the Explorer since it uses 4 AAs (which is about 8 hours of use), BUT you CAN use rechargeable batteries of 2000mAH or higher! This is a very good thing because the LeapPad gets a lot of play time in our house, whch means lots of batteries. I'd recommend having two sets of batteries, so one can be charging while the other is in use. In addition, you can also use a AC adaptor (sold separately) to power your LeapPad.
Things it's missing is an expandable SD slot or a way to download games like you can the Leaplets. I also wish the protective devices like the Gel Skin was available NOW.

I know there has been a lot of talk about cost. It's my thoughts that the LeapPad is competitively priced with other hand held gaming systems on the market. The games are the same as well. The difference is I feel more comfortable handing my savvy 3 ½ year old the LeapPad. I'm about picking my battles and I'd pick the LeapPad.
Overall we're pretty happy with the LeapPad, and often heard in our house is "LeapFrog, PLEASE PLEASE OKAY"
Thanks LeapFrog, for letting us be one of the first families to try out the LeapPad Explorer!

    Another LeapFrog Hit!

My kids (5 and 7) are huge fans of a variety of LeapFrog toys, so we were excited to be given the LeapPad for review. While there are some frustrating aspects about this toy, in general it is a huge hit. The technical frustrations such as needing to connect to the computer, deal with the standard problems you see in a first generation toy, and batteries (oh my gravy, the batteries!) have honestly become an expected part of life for this mom whose kids love technical gadgets. However, the payoff is huge because my five year old especially loves his LeapPad. Just like the Leapster Explorer and the Tag Reader, the LeapPad provides learning games that hold my son's attention and make him feel like a big kid - or like Mom who loves her Nook! I'm looking forward to getting him more apps for the LeapPad this holiday season because money spent on LeapFrog learning games has always been money well spent. I think the LeapPad is going to be one of the toys to have this year!

A Great Children's mini version of ipad

I think this is a winner! Since getting an iPad2 and having to share it with DD, I've been looking for something that would be similar for just her to use. Voila Leapfrog saves the day with this fantastic new leappad. It is fully loaded with a still camera, video camera, microphone, durable shell and large, brilliant screen. The download on Mac for Leapfrog Connect was quick and easy (5 minutes.) Upload of new update and 1 free app was about 10 minutes. A lot of people are saying they wish this had wifi, so let me tell you why I am happy it does Not have wifi. WiFi could be accessed by outside sources, if you are in a public place you wouldn't want someone to be able to access your child's LeapPad's photos, videos and name that is on it. I do wish that the LeapPad had an expandable memory slot (something iPad is also lacking), but taking into consideration that it has 2 GB of memory which should hold a good amount. If you are buying this system, to use to the full potential you will have to buy leapster explorer cartridge games. When I heard about the launch of this system and that it would work with explorer games, I started buying them when I found them on a great deal so we have a small collection already. Having a child play all of the educational games from Leapfrog is so much better than having them play just a DS. Everything on here is fun and has value. If you are worried (as I was) about so much battery usage, there is an a/c adapter port. The adapter is sold seperately though. It was also a bonus to get an extra stylus incase of loss or breakage. It is nice that the LeapPad holds the stylus with a magnet so it is easy to put into the side. Bottom Line: Would I buy this again and recommend to someone else? YES, absolutely Includes: some apps already downloaded, camera, microphone (internal), 2 styluses(one with string attachment) Does Not Include, recommended purchases: a/c adapter, headphones, leappad explorer cartridge games, case (Leapfrog is releasing them in soon, but in the mean time you might want to use an insulated softside lunchbox as we do), gel skin (leapfrog is releasing soon) Last word: the only issue I foresee is that LeapFrog wants you to spend between $7 and $10 for apps, quite a few are just an app version of something we already own from LeapFrog. In Example, all of the learning videos we have them all on DVD, I don't think I should have to pay $10 again for the same thing I own already. They should be giving a huge discount to current owners of those. Same thing for most of the books, we have them with the Tag system. Hopefully they will either come out with new ones or something.

    Another great product from LeapFrog!

I review products for LeapFrog on my blog, Parenting By Trial and Error, and the LeapPad Explorer is the latest product my family was given to try out. I've been using and loving LeapFrog products for YEARS, since my twin girls received their first LeapPads (a far different product than this one!) about 9 years ago. As expected, they love it. I'm thrilled that the games and apps work with both the Leapster Explorer and the LeapPad Explorer because then we don't have so many fights over who gets to play the new LeapPad. PROS: * A magnetic stylus, which is fairly easy to get in and out and less likely to get lost (I hope!). My youngest son cut the stylus off of every single Leapster we had in the past, which has been very frustrating. * An EXTRA stylus, in case you do lose the original. =) (Fantastic idea, LeapFrog!) * The Learning Path, which allows parents to keep track of their children's learning progress online. * Kid-friendly touch screen with nice, clear resolution. * The camera and video recorder, which may be my kids' favorite features. Combine those with the included Art Studio and you've got hours of fun for kids that like to play with their pictures. The camera is pretty low-resolution, but it serves its function and my boys don't know any better yet. * Art Studio! Lots of fun for kids and it gets their creativity and imagination going. * The "All About Me" game, which allows kids to make books about themselves and share them via Facebook or email. I started my own book and had a lot of fun being creative with it. * Ultra e-books, which are so cool! They're interactive and give kids a new reading experience. * It allows several player profiles and each profile keeps track of that specific child's skill level. This is particularly nice because I remember in the small amount of time when my girls were still playing with their Leapsters (the original ones, I'm talking about here), their brothers would get on them and wreck their progress because there was no such thing as a different profile or log-in. I also love that the LeapPad, as well as the Leapster Explorer, does keep track of each kid's progress. * You can get new games and apps to continually challenge kids (more than 100 in the LeapFrog library!). * Much better alternative to an iPad for younger kids. Of course it's much more limited than an iPad, but it's also a fraction of the cost. * It's educational, which is my very favorite thing about LeapFrog products

LeapFrog Does it Again with the LeapPad - My PreSchooler Cannot Put it Down!

After months of stealing my iPad for all of the kids apps, my four year old daughter finally got the LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet (pink). From the moment it arrived weeks ago (it was sent to us courtesy of LeapFrog for review purposes for my blog), she has not put it down. She absolutely loves it. In fact she hides it from her older brother and sister so they can not play with it. SPECS The screen is a large five inches and the controls are incredibly easy for four year old fingers to work. The graphics are visually appealing and the touch screen had my child enamored from the start. The LeapPad comes with a camera and video recorder plus a microphone. Each child can create their own profile complete with a picture. GAMES AND MORE My daughter has been doing well with the learning games. There are a wide variety of games and ebooks for kids of all ages which I absolutely love. My daughter especially loves the Art Studio. She loves creating BATTERY AND CHARGING I did not find the battery life to be very long so we go through a lot of batteries so we opted with the rechargeable battery option which is perfect. Four AA are always being used and four are always being charged. There is an optional A/C adapter to use while plugged in but we decided against it due to portability. My daughter carries this with her everywhere. WHAT I WOULD CHANGE My daughter has already lost the stylus (and the back up stylus) but it works fine without it. There is a string option for the stylus but we couldn't get that to go through the small opening to get attached. Big mistake! Make sure you attach it or it might be gone. I would also suggest protecting the screen in some way. This really is the perfect alternative for children to the iPad.
