I bought this because I used to love Risk, and wanted to play a version with 2 players. We played it once. I was attracted to the idea of a redesigned board that was more balanced.
1) Too many obscure rules that are hard to keep straight. What's with the odd moon invasion rules?
2) Whimsical cards that complicate play and often add nothing strategically useful.
3) Flimsy over-detailed yet insufficiently distinct plastic 1-3-5 mod (army) and commander pieces.
As usual for Risk, once things start going downhill for a player, it's almost impossible to recoup the loss.
On the other hand, in the one game we played, the superior strategy did prevail, which is what one hopes for. I liked the devastated no-man's land random scenarios for each game, and the neutral 3rd player army distributions.
It would have been better with a bit less complexity, more meaningful cards (or no cards) and, still, better with more than two players.
