    Its risky bying this Risk

Gameplay/Instructions: Risk onyx remains for the most part faithfull to the tried and true risk gameplay. There are some new perks, such as a booster for moving extra troops but not much changes. If you've played risk before you wont be surprised here. The manual is glossy and acts as a sort of, "welcome on board private. Here is your mission." type feeling.

Board/Pieces: The board is elevated and sturdy. Its the right size to hold all the pieces and you never feel it get crowded. Its also very detailed and the colors are very glossy and stand out. On the downside, it has no locking mechanism to speak of. When you put the two parts of the board together two groves on one side correspond to two on the other side which does hold the board together from the sides but any accidental knock from the bottom or top of the board can disconnect it. The gamepieces are my biggest beef with this game. The troops are either a block, denoting one unit or a cylinder denoting five. Whilst this does make the troop numbers very easy to tell I feel it leaves much to be enjoyed. One would assume that a more modern risk like this one might have troops shaped as say tanks, or planes or humvees or something more unique. But the pieces are big, clear, color coded and easy to use.

To sum it up, if you like risk or wish to give this as a gift to someone who likes risk they will enjoy it a whole lot and it will look nice. If you've never played before or wish to just have one for occasional play, save your money and buy one of the cheaper versions.

    Great Board

The game board is a collectors item to be played on. However, the game pieces are extremely cheap. The pieces from the standard Risk game are better. The title, Risk Onyx, implies that the pieces would be made out of onyx or some sort of stone, not very inexpensive plastic. We are using the onyx game board and pieces from our older Risk set. I would not recommend buying the Risk Onyx: B&N Exclusive at the listed or discounted price.

    Nicest Risk Game Ever!

We have a lot of games -- but this is amazing. The quality of the thick board is functional and beautiful.

Many games have special editions where they mess too much with the rules -- this one get's it right! They add a few additional features to the tried-and-true game. All of them make it even more fun and challenging to play.

The packet of rules is creative, functional and beautifully designed. Can you tell I love this game!

Misprinted Game Board - Greenland/Iceland & Great Britain/Western Europe Links Missing

The title says it all. They were in such a rush to get their holiday money that they made 2 huge mistakes in printing the board and those mistakes completely change the game if left uncorrected. Sadly, there is no offerred fix by the manufacturer...so you are left with using a permanent marker and a ruler to "correct" the print problem, or some such other cheesy home fix. Mistakes happen. To err is human. To not offer a fix for an obvious and significant production defect is a deliberate act, not an accident. How hard would it be for them to produce a high quality sticker to fix the print flaw? How expensive? They should have done better and they could have, but they decided that they would not. Thank you for your money, now shove off! And a cheery poke in the eye to you to, Hasborg!

Risk Onyx Edition adds a new dimension to classic strategy

We bought this for my dad, an avid Risk fan. He still has the original board he bought in 1967 while serving in the Navy. Due to the mass amounts of time dedicated to playing this game, we've improvised the rules quite a bit. The Onyx Edition actually has some of our modifications- capital cities, etc. If you're familiar with the game, the lack of a bridge between Iceland and Greenland, as well as some PC country name changes, will throw you off. If you're new to the game, this is a great, good-quality set that has several different play options and adjusts well to different skill levels.

    Best Risk ever!

I have played this game with 2 families that are avid risk fans and all people agree this is the best version of risk yet. There are several ways to play and concievablly you can play a game that lasts 30 minutes all the way to a few hours depending on the style of play. The board is black which makes the black pieces hard to see, but not really that much of a negative to me. I also really like the construction of the board itself

    Missing Connection: Greenland to Iceland?!

As I shopped in B&N the beautiful packaging for the Onyx edition of Risk caught my attention. I am an avid Risk fan and noticed a major flaw with the new edition from the image on the back. There is no longer a line connecting Greenland and Iceland thus preventing any chance of invading Europe or North America from very specific and elongated routes. Though the new variations with objectives and goals and pretty packaging look great, the change in game-play really stopped me from buying this. I don't know if this was intentional or just a missed detail but I took a pass on this one for that reason alone.

Absolutely WONDERFUL! Sturdy board so troops stay in place!

I bought this last year for Christmas as a gift for my husband and our two boys (now ages 11 and 8). All three are avid Risk fans and can sit and play this game for hours on end (hence the tired mom thinking of it as a gift...). I love the raised sturdy board. We have the standard version from Target and the pieces and board were always getting moved around when the game had to be put on hold. Having a sturdy board like this is essential if you love to play this game. It is pricey, but I would buy this game again in a heartbeat. It's well worth it in my eyes!

    Excellent Christmas Gift

I bought two of these games at different times for Christmas gifts for both of my adult children (23 & 27 years old). Both were raised playing this family game and it's carried over to them and their friends. I've yet to play the game as of yet but both reports on them have been very good! There's nothing like a successful Christmas gift!
