Having played Scrabble since age 7 or so, I bought this set as a birthday present to myself, thinking the black and silver would be great in our home. Like others, though, I've been disappointed by the poor quality. Too much glue, pieces of uneven size as mentioned. My biggest annoyance is actually that some of the letters are struck higher on the tiles than others. This results in 'wavy words'. Also, why can't we have two hourglasses? When one player plays quickly, the glass can't immediately be reused.

Disappointed, thought when I saw it in the store it was a really nice set. We were in Santa Rosa on vacation at the time, and could not buy it then. Sorry I bought it now. I like my old game better.

i purchased this game for a friend of mine. i was horfied when he opened the box! the quality is the worse i ha ve ever seen. the board is a piece of paper pasted on top--pasted in a sloppy manner at that. the spinner doesnt sit high enough to spin easily. the tiles ar not the regular wooden tiles with the letter etched in it. they are plastic tiles with painted on letters. to top it off the hour glass kept getting clogged. i was so embarrassed at such a cheesy gift (although he was nice and didnt complain) i took it back and got him the scrabble deluxe. which iam satisfied. so the bottom line, SCABBLE ONYX EDITION IS CHEESY!!! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

I am very disappointed in this purchase. I am a scrabble player and have wanted to upgrade to a deluxe edition of the game for a long time. I had hoped to receive one as
a gift, but finally decided to treat myself. I found this version of the game to be very flimsy and not at all "deluxe" relative to what it costs. I have seen much more substantial versions elsewhere and thought that given the price this would besimilar. This was not the case.

Ever since I saw the board I was dying to get it! It was expensive so I waited a while to get it.. finally got it and it is NOT worth the price. The board is made of crappy quality!! You can see the glue on the board.. the board was crooked! I was extremely disappointed! I immediately returned it!! DO NOT BUY!

I bought this edition for my fiance, but will be exchanging it for the Deluxe edition ASAP. The box is excellently designed, but upon opening, the disappointments begin. The board looks and feels extremely cheap, as though it was hastily thrown together. The rotating stand does not elevate the board high enough to turn smoothly on any surface other than a solid and perfectly flat object. Even the box itself was not flat enough! When you do put it on a counter-top or table, the rotation is not smooth. The game-play area is nothing more than a sticker that was not properly placed on the board, apparently, as it had a large air bubble/ridge down one side, and was covered with a hot- glued wooden grid. The grid is very shallow and will allow for easy disruption of placed tiles. Some of the grid squares had ridges of glue around the edges. All-in-all, this edition appears to have been shoddily built by a grade school shop class, and is not at all elegant. I've used the Deluxe edition, and I know that it is an excellent item. If you were putting the Onxy Edition on display, it may be for you ... just make sure that nobody can inspect it too closely however, if you wish to actually play the game, stick with the Deluxe edition.

I love Scrabble! My husband and I play every week. So when we saw the Scrabble Onyx edition, looking sleek in black-and-silver, with a built-in turntable, we thought we'd treat ourselves with some gift cards we had received.
What a rip-off. Shame on Scrabble for charging $50 for this dud. The turntable sticks and is ridiculously noisy. We'll end up putting the board, turntable and all, on top of the $5 plastic lazy susan we used with our classic Scrabble board. The silver paper on the board is not completely glued down, but bubbles up at the side. The timer only works sporadically: you have to tap it from time to time to get the sand flowing in the hourglass, so basically it's useless. The scorepad is probably the nicest part, and we won't even use it, because we already have a notebook dedicated for that purpose.
So don't waste your money on this one.

This is a large box and that is one reason I won't give it 5 stars. Cause it isn't something that can fold-up or store easily. But it is truly classy and beautiful if your really into Scrabble. The letters on the tiles are not cut in but simply printed on, but they stay on the trays unlike the cheapest versions. It is wooden so it turns nicely and won't scratch your table underneath either. It makes a real nice gift.

I bought this game to play with my sister when she visited me in FL. She was impressed with it also. Nicely made. Only problem with it is that it didn't help me win.

I received this as a birthday prenent and found it is very nice - high quality pieces and board, and we really like the rotating turntable.

I purchased this Onyx Scrabble for one of my best friends for Christmas. It is so elegant, not the usual Scrabble board. The board rotates very smoothly so that each player can take their turn playing and can see the Board from their vantage point, and is so easy to play because the letters stay in the acrylic, bordered places that are available for each letter. I am a Scrabble junkie and love this special Board!

This is a great edition of the Scrabble game. My entire family and guests enjoy it and I highly recommend it. The turntable feature works well and it feels and looks like a quality game.

Traditional scrabble enjoyment as well as a visual and tactile treat! Beautiful to look at -- a pleasure just to get it out of the cupboard! Sound construction, convenient rotation and lock-in placement of the letters which are not difficult to remove; handy velvet storage bag for letters. Glad I bought it!

Tired of buying the same old wedding gifts off the registry that are one or two of a set of twelve. Buy one of these outstanding Scrabble games. We got one 31 years ago when we were married and still have it. We have played it with our children through the years, and every time we take it out we remember our Wedding Day AND....the person who gave it to us.

I've seen this edition of scrabble at B&N for a few years and finally got it for Christmas. It's awesome first of all it's the deluxe edition which means it has a grid which keeps your tiles in place and it rotates on a "turntable/lazy susan" so each player can look at it when it's their turn. I love that it's black too, it looks soooo sharp. I highly suggest picking one up if you love scrabble.

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. This is a pretty decent Scrabble set for the price. We wanted a set with a working turntable board that was playable. The onyx color scheme was a plus.
I was a bit worried about the quality, but ours seems ok. I agree that the board looks a little cheaper than I'd like, but everything lines up and looks fine unless you nit-pick it. The letters aren't engraved into the tiles but they look good and are very readable. The score pad does not have a blank board to record the game, which is slightly annoying.
We also considered the Diamond Anniversary Edition, which is all plastic and folds into a travel case. But the board graphics being completely different than the classic Scrabble colors was just too different for us.
The current Deluxe Turntable set gets horrible reviews, but I almost bought a used Deluxe Scrabble set from the late 1980s. Those are well-made, have a turntable, and good ridges between the letters. But even used they run almost the same price as this set.
If you're concerned about the quality, there is also a Premier Wood Edition set available elsewhere with good reviews that is currently twice the price of this set.
If you get this set, you might want to go ahead and pick up the matching dictionary.

It's definitely a 'nice to have' - but I'll vouch that it is indeed nice to have! I recommend also getting the dictionary with it - so much fun!

I received the Scrabble Onyx as a Christmas present. I have played scrabble since I was 5 years old. The best board by far was the blue turning board right before the newer maroon deluxe edition. This onyx edition was a dissappointment for several reasons. First, the turning board was not high enough to clear the letters. Secondly, the tile racks were not closed on either side so that the letters could not slide off. Thirdly, the raised grid was not high enough to prevent the letters from moving. Scrabble please pay attention. WE LOVE THE GAME. MAKE US A BOARD WE CAN BE PROUD OF AND PLAY ON. It is clear that this board was thrown together and the price was not to be believed. I have never returned a Christmas present, but this year I insisted. Still looking for the ultimate board. Hasbro should contact us.

Nice looking but not well-thought-out. As a Scrabble entusiast, I have all the Scrabble versions out there. The only thing my friends & I liked about this set is the easier-to-read board (can easily distinguish between the 'double letter' and 'tripple letter' squares.) The tile holder/rack: too narrow - the tiles fall out very easily there is no convenient letter distribution list on it as in the Deluxe Edition (must look on the board). The box: too much space fillers - can't store the Scrabble dictionary in it (the Deluxe Edition has built-in storage tray beneath the rotating board for all the game pieces, including the Scrabble dictionary!) The game board: as stated earlier - easier to read but, sits flush to the table, not elevated like the Deluxe Edition - so make sure that you have a LARGE game table, because when you rotate the board, you can knock the other players' tiles off the coffee table (unless that is what you intended to do - ahem!). The score keeper pad: OK. Hour glass: OK.
