Didn't transmit sound - poor receiver

My son was really into the Spy Gear this Christmas. I got him several items, the rest of which appear to be satisfactory. But this walkie talkie can barely be used. We got them to transmit voices when they were within 5 feet of each other and the antennas directly pointed at each other. The "beep" could be heard (very quietly) at a slightly greater distance, but it could not be used between two different rooms. Very disappointing. I had brand new 9V batteries in them, so I don't think low voltage was an issue. But I might open them up to see if there was any damage inside (like a poor solder connection).
