Discover Great New Writers Spring 2012

Dear Reader:

One of my favorite parts of  this job is working with the booksellers who comprise the Discover Great New Writers selection committee. They’re a great gang of dedicated, thoughtful readers — whip-smart, funny, and not afraid to say, “It’s good, but it just isn’t Discover,” before launching a carefully-considered argument. Suffice to say, I know we’ve selected the absolute best from the hundreds of submissions we saw from Spring 2012. The links below will take you directly to an individual title’s product page, or you can view the entire Spring 2012 season at a glance.

American Dervish by Ayad Ahktar

Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo

Birds of a Lesser Paradise by Megan Mayhew Bergman (due 3/6)

The Book of Jonas by Stephen Dau (due 3/1)

By the Iowa Sea by Joe Blair (due 3/6)

From the Memoirs of a Non-enemy Combatant by Alex Gilvarry

Glaciers by Alexis M. Smith

A Good American by Alex George

Monstress by Lysley Tenorio

The Rules of Inheritance by Claire Bidwell Smith

Running the Rift by Naomi Benaron

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

The Translation of the Bones by Francesca Kay

Wayward Saints by Suzzy Roche

What They Do in the Dark by Amanda Coe (due 3/13)

Wide-ranging in subject, style, and voice, these gorgeously-written books are all stories of identity: what it means, how we make ours, and where we belong in the world.

We hope you enjoy discovering them as much as we did.

Cheers, Miwa
