Sounds like a labor of love
Let's begin with a proviso: a book like this *always* has inexplicable omissions. Nothing by rock band Dire Straits or the great Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz? Three albums by Marvin Gaye but only one by Gilbert & Sullivan or Dizzy Gillespie or Cole Porter? What th'?!? But you shouldn't consult a book like this to insist that its author, longtime music critic Tom Moon, confirm your musical preferences or prejudices. You should consult it so Moon can recommend a world of music -- rock, jazz, gospel, opera, R&B, country, pop, folk, blues, hip-hop, classical, and more -- you've inevitably overlooked in your busy life ... and perhaps to remind you of great music you've heard on the run but never taken the time to acquire, pop into a CD player, and give it the sit-down hearing it deserves. (You know, stop and smell the roses and all that.) For each album, Moon not only includes key tracks to focus on -- and usually discusses them in his album profile -- but "next stop" and "after that" albums to try if you like what you're listening to. Bottom line, this guide will open your ears to some of the best recordings ever committed to shellac, vinyl, or polycarbonate.

Great Valentine's Day Gift
I purchased this book as a Valentine's day gift for my husband. My husband likes classical music but admittedly knows very little about or is familiar with any other genre. He is having a great time; however, it has upped our I-Tunes bill as he discovers more and more music that he likes.

Loving this book
I'm still in the A's -- but have already heard a lot of great music that I'd otherwise never have known to look for. One big tip: I wouldn't buy hundreds of CDs that I might not like. But for rhapsody.com subscribers like myself, this book is a bonanza. I have access to all kinds of music, but I don't know what to look for. This guide is terrific. One of my favorite recent purchases.

what the....?
is this some kind of joke? lil jon? mc hammer? but no Gordon Lightfoot. Wow, we might as well start reading comic books(um, 'graphic novels') in our literature classes. Oh yeah, some places already are. Oh well, could be that I'm just sick of these 1000 things to do books.
