Almost instantly becoming one of my favorite novels in recent memory, Peter Clines' "14" is a near-flawless mystery-thriller-horror (in that order) with human characters as richly portrayed as the book's strongest presence: the hauntingly unforgettable Kavach Building. What begins as a self-referenced Scooby Doo hunt for clues into the apartment building's specific eccentricities soon becomes a treasury of mind-bogglery as the concepts of time/history, space/location, and insider/outsider reality are challenged and rocked to their foundations. As with most works in this genre, the less known going in, the better.

In reference to the front cover's blurb mentioning "Lost," it's worth noting unlike that promising TV series that was eventually crushed beneath the weight of its lack of focus and fore-thought, "14" delivers a fulfilling and contextually sensical conclusion that leaves very few narrative stones unturned. Though like the show, a lot of the fun here is in carrying on an internal dialogue with the characters as they discuss the myriad explanations for the madness surrounding them.

Essentially a locked room mystery as experienced outside the room, "14" is Peter Clines on top of his, and many other novelists', game. With a pace as fast as lightning, and a plot that quakes like thunder (as well as a nifty book jacket), this should soar to the top of book lists everywhere and stay there long after the initial reading is through. (And in the meantime, check out the rest of his action-packed literary arsenal.)

This book is about a group of people living in an apartment buidling with very weird (unexplained) mysterious oddities. I really enjoyed reading out the relationships formed between the tenants of the building and how they grow through out the book. I think for the most part, all the mysteries are answered by the time you finish the book. I thought the explanation behind the mysteries was bizarre and really imaginative! This book reminds me of some strange Sci-Fi movie, little far-fetched for my own taste, but overall I did enjoy it.

Best book I've read this year

14 was an incredible journey, and one I highly recommend taking. The book spends the first 3/4 building mystery after mystery, one on top of the other, all surrounding this mysterious and dilapated apartment building in LA. For a long while, no answers will come - just more strange occurances and questions. And then the pieces start to come together. It's rare when it happens, but this book's payoff is equal (perhaps even greater) to its buildup. The implications and notions set forth in this book are fascinating and make for a very fun, very enjoyable read. Not every question is answered (but it's pretty close), but I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story, interesting characters and wonderfully unique journey.

Review of 14 by Peter Clines 5 stars ¿14¿ is an exceptionall

Review of 14 by Peter Clines
    5 stars

“14” is an exceptionally plotted horror novel, in the Classic sense, but it is also an exploding and exploratory sci fantasy (fantastical with elements of hard science). I found it totally riveting, a literal “I can’t put this down” reading session. Author Peter Clines demonstrates a strong background in the classics of horror, as well as science fiction, steampunk, and alternate-world fantasy. I hesitate to say too much: the novel really deserves to be read, pondered, and savoured.

Nate is a minimum-wage, bored, data entry employee in Los Angeles. Unexpectedly, he finds himself in need of a residence, as one of his roommates is marrying and the other one is moving back to San Francisco, and his salary won’t cover their house. An acquaintance mentions an apartment building with a vacancy where the rents are incredibly low (focus is on the adjective “incredibly”) so Nate immediately checks into it, discovering the rent really is that low, and moves in. It’s not long before he, in conjunction with some of the other tenants, begins to investigate, and to discover the reason for the low rent, not to mention padlocked apartments, doors without doorknobs, a sub-basement, and an elevator that has not run since the building’s inception, in the last years of the 19th century.

Empathetic characters and a truly expansive imaginative field of play made “14” a favourite of mine, and a re-read. Do yourself a favour, and don’t miss out.

I reviewed a complimentary e-book copy in return for my fair and impartial review.

    2013 best so far

Intriging mix of science, history/historical figures, mystery and romance. Character depth is just right. It helps to pull you into a story of discovery! For the characters in the book, discovery of who they are and who they are not, and of the world around them. Discovery of freedom and fear beyond imagining.
Excellent read, thank you Mr. Clines.

    Fantastic, page turner.

This book has the right level of mystery to action. All of the characters feel real and fleshed out, making for a very enjoyable book. I really hope there will be a sequel.
