It's a guidebook from 1936.

I hope nobody giving it 1 star was expecting something modern, because, hello, right there in the title.

Anyway: fascinating look at the attitudes of the time, especially in the sections on being a tourist in Nazi Germany (!) and the USSR (!!). Each section is a narrative, told from the hypothetical point of view of an Englishman going on a vacation in each country.

This free book was not worth my time to down load, I look forward to my Fridays free e-books from Barnes & Noble, this was so disappointing, even tho it was free, I have traveled to some extent, this book would never even come close to helping me, its not even a story..cant wait to delete it... Great for history buffs

A great view of what Europe and travelling were like in times long gone. Telegraphs were the norm, a Nook was not even imagined possible... A very different world that was interesting to read about.

    Nice different

I personally do not own a color nook to get free books. I love free Fridays but will live if there is a book on the list I do not personally like.
This book is a nice diversion from some of the regular books offered. It is fun to go back in history to see what the world was like back then and compare it to now. I enjoyed reading requirements, ads, etc. I was not at all disappointed in the book.
Good selection for history buffs as well as travel buffs. An actual learning book. Not a book about vampires
Thanks for all the free books no matter what subject.

    What fun

If you are worried about taking up space on your Nook with something you don't like do a little research. I love to travel and often think about what a place was like 50, 60 or even 75 years before. This is a gem. Highly recommended for a sophisticated traveler or someone who wishes they were.

    Highly Recommended for travelers!

I am a faithful downloader for freebies. I based my opinion on a need for guidance to another country. Thanks Mr.Fodor.

    Give this book a chance

I see that some people took one look at this title and immediately concluded that it was not worth downloading. That's a shame. This isn't just a listing of hotels and restaurants, but rather a set of narratives about each country. Often the observations are hilariously biting, such as the description of hotel wallpaper that is so colorful one can see it with one's eyes closed. Often there are fascinating observations about the cultural standards of the time, like whether it is socially acceptable for an English woman to dine in a Belgian Cafe or whether it is social acceptable to drop into a Parisian house of ill repute with one's wife for a drink. This book is worth downloading.

An armchair tourist in time and space

When in college I found such interesting books in the stacks. That's what this book was like. I return to it so often, esp late at night so I can dream.
