Masterpiece in the Eye of the Beholder
For a teacher who wants short selections of "masterpiece" short stories for high schools students, this one is a real winner. All the elements of the short story (fiction, in general) can be taught with these quick reads. For years i have been using the stories from this small volume to hook my students on characterization, theme, tone. I highly recommend. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Not quite a masterpiece
This work has many little treasures in it, and is a wonderful book for carrying with you to places where you know you might have five or ten minutes to read, places like the waiting room of the dentist's office. Yet I believe that what this format does show, these one or two page short- works , is that the limited space does limit the power of the literature. I wonder why it is lyric poetry can in a much more condensed space evoke much stronger feeling than the short short story can. Perhaps I am wrong but I often had the feeling after reading these little gems of less than full satisfaction. Nonetheless a highly recommended and enjoyable work. Was this review helpful?
