An excellent book. So well written. This author never disappoints. If you can appreciate complex characters, lovely dialogue, mystery, and hot mid 19th century romance you'll like this book. As usual redemption and growth is possible even in the darkest of circumstances. I loved the hero so much and the heroine is so strong . A refreshing change from the preponderence of trash being published today.

Liz Carlyle is usually pretty consistent, but there's something about this series I just can't get behind. The first book was okay, the last book was slightly repetitive and this one was convoluted. The shame is that Carlyle has two of her strongest characters featured in The Bride by Moonlight... steely Royden Napier who's been fascinating as a secondary character in the previous novels and Elizabeth Colburne who was terrifyingly vengeful in the last book as she masqueraded as a man determined to bring down the person she held responsible for her family's tragedy. Elizabeth in this book was cheeky (a quality I love in a heroine), independent and resourceful. One small quibble is that Carlyle portrayed her as not very likeable in the last book so there was a bit of a readjustment in viewing her as heroine material. Other criticisms include a large cast of characters whose relationships (despite the helpful list in the front of the book) were confusing and a rather dull mystery to be solved. It seemed the author was going for an Agatha Christie type house "whodunnit" where everyone was a suspect, but the pacing was really slow. I also wished for more face time between Royden and Elizabeth who had some genuine chemistry, but their scenes together were pages and pages apart with the stuff in the middle not terribly interesting.

    Great book!

Excellent book. This is the story of Elizabeth Collburn and Royden Napier. Elizabeth has spent her adult life trying to avenge her father's death and Napier is the assistant police commissioner. Their paths cross when he is investigating a murder in which she is a witness. The circumstances are quite questionable, and Royden is hesitant to leave Elizabeth alone until he has it figured out. He blackmails her into taking a trip with him, and she hesitantly agrees to his request. During this trip, they form a shakey truce and work together to solve a mystery involving the questionable deaths of 2 peope at this family estate. Excellent primary and secondary plots, great character development and 4+ steam.

    No woo woo

Or almost none. I haven't cared for some of Carlyle's recent books in spite of loving her writing. This was a welcome return. My only concern is that it is a tight sequel to the last book.
