A near-perfect mystery that takes place in Canada. Lincoln Munroe is a married detective looking for a serial killer in this police procedural. Its an emotional romp with mostly good red herrings and a dash of romance, upsetting the protag and other characters. However (the reason for not giving 5 stars), I had a hard time believing in the manner of finding "clues" related to some of the cases. Made the story sound almost like a paranormal. Still a great read! I'm looking forward to Drake's sequel after reading the included excerpt.

Abrupt ending

I enjoyed this book right upp to the end, where it kinda left me hanging. If I wanted to use my imagination to finish the story I would just write my own story. I really hate that.

    Average Read ...

I enjoyed the book in that as the story goes on the author offers glimpses of what is coming next and you need to use your imagination to figure out what is going to happen next.

I was kind of disappointed with the main character when it came to moral decisions and he always opted to ride that fine line of right and wrong.

It's a murder mystery but there were slavery lessons throughout the book. Overall an ok read but probably won't read anymore by this author.

This book suffered from 3 distinct plotlines and might have been better off focusing on a single one. With 2 different murder cases and a relationship story being juggled I found myself wishing that the author would have focused on a single story. Also I wasn't sure what the author was going for, it wasn't detailed enough to be a procedural crime book like Donald Harstad and/or Michael Connolley but it also wasn't enough of a mystery to fit in that category. The author also threw in some hints of the main character having some precognition abilities. I think the author would benefit from focusing on a single story line and either going with the precog thing or not. As it is it felt like the author was trying to appeal to way too many audiences. The book wasn't all bad as the writing was evocative and he did a good job describing action and locations but I probably won't be reading any more in the series.

Rating this book was a bit of a challenge. I'd give the overall story arc four stars. It was engaging with intriguing character concepts. But, the book desperately needed an editor before getting published. Somebody to remove the unnecessary dialogue, smooth out the bumps in the plot line, and encourage the author to flesh out the characters more. A round or two of professional-level revisions would have made this a a really good read IMO.

    Good Enough

I got this book and I really liked the start. I found the book to be well written, but I didn't like the main character. Kind of a cry baby.
A lot of the characters seemed to be going through the motions as well. There wasn't much depth to them.

The plot was another problem. There were some paranormal things that just never came up again and there were two cases in the book that had nothing to do with each other, which felt a bit like lazy plotting.
I skimmed the last hundred pages of the book to be honest.
