I admit, I was hesitant to pick up what the description implied was essentially Sherlock Holmes fan-fiction. I am glad I did, however. While Sherlock does pop in every now and then the story is entirely Evelina's. The steampunk and magic elements really lend themselves to the plot favorably and I quite enjoyed working out the various twists and turns they threw in. It is well written and the characters develop wonderfully and in sometimes unexpected ways. For me the ability of a novel to surprise me is something I value. No, this isn't a piece of literary history that will change your world, but reading for pleasure isn't about that. I definitely recommend this.
