Gorgeous music arranged for two cellos!

Julian Lloyd Webber is a wonderful cellist, and this recording is candy for the cello lover’s ears. The brief section of the liner notes written by Mr. Webber refer to his previous Naxos recording of works by Delius and various Irish composers, and he reflects that he and his wife (cellist Jiaxin Lloyd Webber) really enjoyed making quality music together. However, the quantity of appealing music for two cellos was very slim, so the idea to arrange other works for two cellos was born and this recording is the result.

The disc features works originally written by Purcell, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Saint-Seans, Dvorak, Piazzola, Monteverdi, Shostakovich, Holst, Pergolesi, Rubenstein, Nevin, Barnby, Quilter, Arvo Part, and others. Each of these works is sweetly performed Mr. Webber, and his very talented friends (John Lenehan – piano, Guy Johnston and Laura van der Heijden – cello, and Catrin Finch – harp), and his wife. Particularly enjoyable are Piazzolla’s “The Little Beggar Boy”, Monteverdi’s “Interrotte speranze”, Rubenstein’s “The Angel”, and Dvorak’s “Autumn Lament”, but I find no fault with any of the works on this recording. They are all wonderful pieces in their original form, and the arrangements here are just simply beautiful.

This is perfect music for a rainy day or a quiet afternoon. I very much enjoyed listening to this recording. Delightfully recommended!
