I really wanted to love this book. I adore Meg Cabot. Fantasy is currently one of my favorite genres. Cabot's Mediator series is one of my all-time favorites, and her Twlight (last book in that series) beats the "other" Twilight any day of the week, in my opinion. However, the first book in her new series, Abandon, just didn't quite do it for me.

For the most part, it was the main character, Pierce. I really didn't like her for most of the book. She was quick to judge, never knew when to keep her mouth shut, and just was generally all-around self-absorbed and unlikeable. It is a complete mystery to me how John ever fell in love with her in the first place, let alone stayed that way. And her switch from never wanting to see him again to total blissed-out in love with him? Where did that even come from?

I'm hoping she'll calm down, cut the drama, and be more likeable in the next two books. I'll keep reading the series, but it will be more for Meg and John than for Pierce. Quite frankly, I was almost wishing he'd left her to the furies toward the end there. My favorite part was when he just calmly read his book while she threw her major hissy fit...I was totally with him on that one. Ugh. Get over it, chickie.

Worst 10 bucks I ever spent!

Now I'll admit, I was hoping for something exciting and thrilling with the positive reviews that were posted. I'm always a bit skeptical about the books I choose to read and the synopsis plus the fact that it was written by the amazing Meg Cabot, I went for it and bought it. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!! I hated the main character. I despised her. Usually I give the main characters a second chance to redeem themselves in the second book, but none for Pierce. It was like she had no depth to her, no personality, nothing likable about her. How John (whom I might add just sounded gross, angry, and ugly to me) fell madly in love with her, I'll never understand. Not only that, but almost half of the book was nothing but flashbacks, pointless ones. There weren't very many other characters mentioned besides her parents, evil grandmother, depressed uncle, cousin with issues, and new friend with giant boobs. They also did not have much personality either. Speaking of her grandmother, I have no clue why she was the evil villain, or how the tassels reference even lead back to her trying to hurt Pierce. If you ask me, Pierce should have just stayed dead from the beginning. Nearly everything about this book barely had any ties to each other and in the end she only ended up back where she belongs, and the whole book only took course over 2-3 days. WOW, that was a WASTE of time.

truthful review from a paranormal romance addict

    did not like this book.
i thought i would, i tryed to like it. i have to have romance! and this book only showed the guy character like 4 times in the whole book. and two of the times was barley 3 sentences. and when you finally see some actual romance its, "I love you, and would die without you!", but like i said they have met like 4 times! for less than a minute! and that minute is not romantic. its... i save your life because of your stupidity.
i skipped most of the book. it was dull. maybe the next book will be better? doubt i read it though....

    could've been better

It was hard to follow and had a lot of holes in the story. Could have been better. I hope she has a better editor for book #2.
