Something you've never seen before
This book is amazingly unique. Barker's ability to create and to inspire the imagination makes for a thrilling book. The language may start out a bit simple, but once the story gets rolling you find yourself lost in this book. I would recomend it to anyone.

Makes you use your imagination
Its nice to get away sometimes and be a part of a different world, the books of Abarat definitely do that, strange worlds, strange combinations in animals and some people, just read and let your imagination do the work.

Great book
I have read many books by Clive Barker and picked this series up thinking it was his usual "Adult" novel. While it is geared toward teens and young adults, it is just as good as his hard core stuff. Definately worth the money and I will be getting Book 3 shortly.

Beautiful
It really is a beautiful book. All of Clive Barkers paintings that are about the story are in it as well as his poetry. The characters you will just love to love and love to hate. Barker created a very stunning world and it really is hard to put the book down.

Clive Barker has written many great books but by my opion, this series is the bets work hes done! I absolutely love how he made Candy's personality so independant and strong minded and fierce! Gorgossium's residents dont stand a chance!!!!!!!!

Abarat spins a beautiful tale
I absolutely loved this book! I fell in love with the characters and the world of abarat. They are described so well that they seem to really exist. While reading, I found myself wishing I was Candy and experiencing all the amazing adventures and people she encounters. I was never a true fan of Clive Barker's work because it didn't call to me in the past, so I was surprised to come across this series. Barker's writting style is there, but as far as content goes this is a whole new genre and he masters this genre as he did horror. I would recommend this series to anyone age 11 to adult, appropriate for young adults as far as content but definitely enjoyable for adults! You won't regret this wonderful story!

extravaganza!
the wonderful arabat books are amazing! i was pleasantly surprised to see that the very dark (to say the least) clive barker wrote these incredible books that children can read! nothing dirty in them, just pure unadulterated fantasy & i recommend it for young & old! plus, the editions w/barker's paintings going along w/the story are just fantastic--he is a great artist & depicts his characters so that one can stretch his/her imaginination even more than just reading a description of the characters. and the characters are so diverse, it's unbelievably charming. one blurb i read about the books stated that they were like a cross between the wizard of oz and the chronicles or narnia. i would agree w/this but arabat is packed w/even more fantasy than both those awesome books combined! i have read almost all of barker's books & i know of no other author in my lifetime that has achieved the originality he displays in his writings. no two books are alike & i can't see that anyone could stamp barker as formulaic! i wish every voracious reader would check these books out. i think it's going to be a quartet, too, so that means two more editions of this spectacular adventure series. also, you will adore the heroine, candy...she is a very interesting character. enjoy!

A reviewer
This book was truly fantastic. Clive Barker thins the veil between good and evil, allowing speculation and doubt on the integrity of every character. His attention to detail created an unforgetable picture of a world seemingly so different but oddly the same.

Clive Barker's Abarat.
Incredible. Absolutely amazing, one of his best works, appealling to younger readers but still has some of his earlier works quirkyness. I've read some of his earlier books, and even in those you can see how he takes a little from each story and puts them together sometimes in a completely different way to what you were expecting. I've found that all of his books finds you asking yourself, 'How come I didn't think of that? It's such an easy image to concoct, so why didn't I see it first...?' Clive Barker has a way of seeing through our modern lives, pulling a in front of (or away from) his eyes and writing what we all WANT to see, but have just outgrown the ability to see it. Praise to Clive Barker! X

Ridiculously Good
Wow. I won't go into detail about the plot for you have all the previous stuff to find it in but I will concur with a reviewer who came before me: this stuff is one of the most underated fantasy books in print and it should certainly garner more attention. Candy, the Islands of the Hours and the mystery shrouding the Twenty-Fifth Hour...the drama and horror and intrigue is all in this BOOK. I ate it up and now I own both and am waiting for the third. It is too good. Really, really good.

Abarat..whats that...WOW..thats awesome...
It kind of happened on accident.I was at a yard sale and got to talking to the lady about the kind of books that I liked to read. I told her I liked the whole Mythical thing. So she got to talking about an author that I had never heard of Clive Barker. I told her that I never heard of him and she gave the first book to me. It was Better than Harry Potter and any other book I had ever read. So I returned her book to her after I finished and she handed me the second. I just recently got done with it and it was even more amazing then the first. I am in high school and doing a report on the book, found this website and read some of the critics reviews. I have never read any of Clive Barkers other books, but now that I know that he is a good writer, I may just have to. And I am spreading the word as I go.

REALLY GOOD BOOK!!!
I loved this Abarat so naturally, when I saw this book out, I was ecstatic! It was an interesting shift from Hereafter to Abarat and back. If you are a passionate reader like me and love a good science fiction or fantasy novel, I have a hunch you will love Abarat and it's sequel, this.

Grr...
There are a lot of reviews out there, and I usually don't add mine to the mix, but Abarat was recommended to me by a friend, and once I picked it up, it was like a slap in the face. If you liked Harry Potter, but are looking for something more, try Abarat. Clive Barker uses outstanding imagery and play on words. The characters are unique and curious. It makes you want to delve deeper into the world of Abarat. The only down-side that I can see to the whole thing was that The Lord of Midnight, Lord Carrion, died. That was depressing for me, even though he was a villain. Oh, one more thing that brought me close to tears, the third book hasn't been published yet... now THAT's depressing... it was an excellent book, and I'd love to see some good actors and directors have a tea party together and get this up on the big screen.

ABARAT 2
Abarat:Days of Magic, Nights of War is a strange book. I got confused time to time, and had to reread the book again. Other than that, Clive Barker does a great job describing the vivid world of Abarat and the dangers in it.

Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War
This book is exceptional to my standards. Clive Barker does an excellent job on descriptions, and leaves you with many cliffhangers at the end of chapters. I found this book full of suspense and action, but the only part that bothered me was I kept on getting confused at times, because I couldn't understand some parts of the book. I reread some pages and even chapters. Another pro to this novel is that many of the un-answered questions in the first novel, Abarat, are finally answered, and you can stop wondering what happened. I really loved the descriptions, because Clive Barker made the magical creatures jump off of the pages. I quote: 'Gorgossium was a place of terrors . He could see the glistening forms of countless monsters as they moved through the littered landscape he could smell the spicy sweet incsence as it rose above the mau in the mist shrouded cemetary.' This fantasy novel is recommended for all ages, as some people can relate to what happens to Candy.

Roll on Volume 3:, 'Absolute Midnight' !!
The books of abarat are amongst the most underrated fantasy stories currently in print. This first novel introduces us to a most vivid imagined world of wonders, visions, monsters (humanoid and alien like but NOT alien in the E.T sense of the word!!),wizards, dragons and much much more. Ive read a few critical reviews by some Barker fans who tend to see these works as a step down the ladder for Clive and I totaly dissagree, they are a sideways step because the content is nowhere near as graphic sexually or otherwise, thats why its a step and any of those areas are totaly out of context for a novel of this kind,unwarranted.. The quality of story and world building is all here and some of the characters are truly memorable, wolfswinkel, mater motley, mischeif, Pixler! These books, to my mind are a far more rewarding experience than Clive's last 'adult' novel, 'Coldheart Canyon' and I hope the Abarat 3 hits the shelves no later than november 2006. One critic said that Abarat isnt going to make people forget narnia or middle earth!, how silly is that for a statement? has the mega selling Harry Potter made us forget them? in a simple word, NO! Does that matter?, in a word, NO! What matters is the enjoyment of the story and what mattered to my mind is that this story is worth every penny you pay for it. A must have series of books for sure, for adults aswell as the younger audience.
