Following the release of the original soundtrack by just a matter of a month (thereby ensuring the irritation of some fans), the deluxe version of
Across the Universe is a double-disc, 29-track set containing almost all of the songs featured in
Julie Taymor's film, all presented in the order they are in the film. The very fact that this expanded version appeared so closely after the original single-disc soundtrack is bound to confuse fans of the film, but what will confuse them even more is that there is another double-disc version of
Across the Universe that contains all 31 songs featured in the film, including
"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and
"Why Don't We Do It in the Road." That longer version only appeared at Best Buy and iTunes, which is frustrating because anybody who loves this film enough to have all the music should be able to acquire it easily, especially since the single-disc version really has all the noteworthy moments that will interest casual fans. So, this is a compromised version -- one that is just close enough to having it all to seem to satisfy, but in truth it's far enough away from its goal to be truly maddening. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
