    I Also Recommend:

    A New Life.

In a new state and starting a new life Addy has many surprises in her future. Vivid and vibrant descriptions of the life of a slave make these stories "real" for the reader; allows the reader to "feel" the emotions of the protagonist, Addy. Beautiful color illustrations with attention to detail and the storyline will attract the young reader's attention. The first book in the Addy series deals with slavery, the second book deals with true friendship and the third one deals with the first Christmas in a new state. Here is an important statement from book number three, "You found out what freedom was about," Reverend Drake said. "It wasn't free!" At the end of each book is a section titled "Looking Back" and it offers a history lesson about the times in which Addy lived also this section gives some vocabulary that should expand the reader's list of vocabulary words. There are words such as abolitionist, slavery, Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation, and several other words or groups of events that are described. These first three books will leave the reader wanting to read the rest of the series.

    Addy's Christmas

In this story, Addy finds a scarf that she would like for her mother on Christmas. But it is twenty cents! Addy delivers, and does errands for Mrs. Ford so that she can buy the scarf for her mother. A few days after, there is a donation for the freedmen. Addy is black, she was a slave and was freed, and she wanted to help the freedmen because she knew how they felt. Later, when Addy has the twenty cents, she saw the scarf (still in the window behind the kettle). Next door, was the donation. Addy really wanted her mother to have the scarf, but instead, she dropped the twenty cents into the donation. When Addy got home, Mrs. Ford gave her a sewing kit. And the day after, Mrs. Ford and Addy's mother, gave her a a beautiful green dress. It was a bit big for Addy, so Mrs. Ford cut of the bottom. Addy used the bottom to make her mother's scarf. And on christmas, Addy's dad came home.
