*****The right place to start*****
This book is one of the best book out there for beginners and mid-level AE users. I would recommend this book to everyone who is taking after effect classes or starting on this great program. Most of the people in my college who is learning after effects uses this book to get a better step-by-step process. I would also buy the 'After Effects in Production' book as these two combine creates the best set for this great program. I use After Effects and Discreet Combustion for most of the post-production work for the things I do in Maya. If you are looking for other great books. Here are my recommendations: -After Effects in Production- -Maya 4.5 Savvy- -Direct Approach: Maya 5- -Maya Character Creation: Modeling and Animation Controls-

It will get you started...
This book is a good way to begin learning Adobe After Effects 6. But it is not the means by which you will learn it all. The book walks you thru several lessons all which lead up to a final project. Some of the instruction in the book are incorrect or absent. Leaving the reader question how to perform certain instruction. For example (pg 77) the book tell you to press ALT+P it forgets to tell you to push SHIFT as well. Thus leaving the reader to figure it out on their own. If I were to rate it I would give it a 3 out of 5
