This is the lone Utopia LP that can be considered a ''success'' commercially, and the one that brought them (for 15 minutes or so) something approaching mass popularity. It is not their best album, but it is a good one, a distinct improvement over OOPS!. Side 1 works beautifully: ''On the Road to Utopia'' is a solid opener; ''You Make Me Crazy'' is a gem; then there's the (believe it or not) hit single ''Set Me Free''; ''Caravan'' is a rousing side-closer. Side 2 starts off promisingly-- ''Shot in the Dark'' is another favorite, but then the album succumbs to weak material; ''Rock Love'' is positively anticlimactic. The whole thing leaves you with the feeling that ''something'' is missing, and that is characteristic of all future Utopia albums. The real star here is the SOUND-- the production is relentlessly state-of-the-art, giving it a razor sharp, metallic surface, guaranteed to tax even the best stereos. Overall, though, a solid effort. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
