The Very Best
I have returned to this book many times over the years and it is still one of the finest political novels ever written. Granted, the subject matter may be a little dated now. The current scandals are so much nastier and intimate that the troubled Senator in this book may seem more foolish than tormented but that is NOW. In the time this book was written, I expect his dark secret would have been every bit as dangerous as he thought and he is forced to deal with blackmail and the confirmation of a candidate. But this is just a first step on a wonderful journey. In this book we learn the characters in the Senate and come to love or hate their honor or lack thereof. This series continues with these same characters but focusing (in turn) on the United Nations, a political convention, an assassination and an election. The series ends in a truly unique way - with two books and two possible endings. I've read a million books in my lifetime, this series is the best.
