After a long pause, I admit it. "Yeah, I have. I'm going to sign up."
Before he can reply, Lark cries out with more emotion then I've ever heard from her.
"NO! That's what Mom did! She did that and now she's dead! You'll be dead too if you go! You can't!"
"Lark, we have to. We have to make this war stop so that no one else's Mommy or Daddy will die."
"NO!" She shrieks. She's sobbing, tears streaming down her cheeks and shining in her eyes.
"Lark, please," Ryde pleads.
"No, you can't do this! You can't..." She breaks off into sobs.
"We have to," I say, trying to communicate that we're going.
"RAHLA! RAHLA!" Lark screams. "RAHLA THEY'RE GOING TO WAR!"
We exchange a glance, then back towards the street. We spin around and take off, our feet crunching on the pavement. A light rain falls, soaking our backs.
"We love you, Lark!" Ryde calls. "It's for the best!"
She's bawling, just standing on the driveway in Rahla's arms. That sight rips my heart to pieces. I turn away.

As we run down the street, I remember my friends.
"Kato!" I yell, because I don't dare stop for fear I might be dragged home. "Owlyn! Lincoln!"
A door flies open, and Kato bursts out, running towards us.
"Terrin!? What's up?" He pants.
"Joining the army." I reply.
A smile twists his lips. "Finally decided to," He comments.
I nod and press on. "Owlyn! Lincoln! Owlyn! Lincoln!"
"Vienna!" My brother shouts his girlfriend's name.
They join us, and our group—now more of a party—reaches the square. We stand before the sign-up building, which looms over us, gray and threatening. We walk to the door and push it open. I look back, wincing when the dark wooden door swings closed. It shuts off my only way to my sister. There's no turning back, now.
