She cannot see the forest for the forest
I may be wrong but I found this book tremendously slow and difficult going. The thick heavy prose had an awkwardness about it. A majestic pretentiousness seemed to inform her pronouncements from on high. Often the thought came to mind'Who does she tink dat she is over der' The great princess of highculturechic may in fact be a pompous creep. I don't know. I believe however, that if Henny Youngman were alive he would send this book to his mother- in-law.

most important literay essay of 20th century
In the fifties every one worried about the meaning and interpetation of Bergman in film,Kafka in literature,Beckett in the theater. Every one also worried about Marxist and Freudian meanings. Her great essay permits us to really enjoy the arts and mass culture properly.
