Interesting idea for a plot-line--dull characters. I really enjoyed the first book in this series: you felt like you became friends with all the characters while the newbie felt his way around the new world. In the second book, new characters didn't receive quite the same depth as continuing characters from the first book. However in this book, new characters are practically card-board cutouts for all the depth they have, and Alex himself is quite distant from the reader as well. I understand Arconn being distant and enigmatic, but Alex, from whose point of view the book is written, is far too distant from the reader, leaving the reader behind in the dust while he becomes the great wizard of the realm. This book could have been so much better written---i'm very disappointing.
