I first found this book in the library and didn't think much of it: a small, worn thing, bound in battered blue leather. Nothing but the faded gilt words of the title on the front. I vaguely remembered that there was a movie made about it, but I had no idea what the story was about. Little did I know, it turned out to be a deeply moving coming-of-age story, on par with The Catcher in the Rye and The Wars. It's the story of a twenty-year-old soldier, not much more than a boy, who struggles between his duty as a soldier and his own value for life, regardless of which side of the trenches it comes from. The novel is quietly poignant and at times devastating, with moments of beauty and horror that could only have been told by someone as an actual witness of that war. A true classic.

Very boring. I hated it! Just wanted it end.

I had to read this book for school and I couldn't wait for it to end! It was very boring, hard to understand what Paul was trying to say, not very engaing. I thought this book would take me 4 days to read but ended up taking 2 weeks to finish. Even for me, a fast reader, this book was hard to read. I had to force myself to keep reading. very dry, hated it. :(

    ZZZZZZ......

This book has got to be one of the worst books ever in book history. I personally don't want to read about chunks of people flying around. The thing that got me most was the extremly poor english. But I guess it did capture my attention for a whole 2 days. My opinion: It's got to be a sin to MAKE someone read this book.

    this is poor

this book was pretty bad. I didn't like it when the protagonist died because that made me think this wasn't that great. Also i would probably say that i liked the war parts because it told how a war is towards the Germans.

    BORING!!!

I HAD to read this book twice. Once for summer reading, and once for a high school English Class. I can't beleive they make kids read this stuff in school. What happened to great writers like Vonnegut or Heller? I never read them in school, but on my own. Don't read this book. It will just put you to sleep, especially if you haven't lived through war and hard times. You won't relate.
