This book will reshape your soul. I don't think it's posssible to find another author who can capture the most isolated moment a human soul can bear and give it beauty in a way that releases you. This passage alone is worth the price of the book - 'He slept that night in a field far from any town. He built no fire. He lay listening to the horse crop the grass at his stakerope and he listened to the wind in the emptiness and watched stars trace the arc of the hemisphere and die in the darkness at the edge of the world and as he lay there the agony in his heart was like a stake. He imagined the pain of the world to be like some formless parasitic being seeking out the warmth of human souls wherein to incubate and he thought he knew what made one liable to its visitations. What he had not known was that it was mindless and so had no way to know the limits of those souls and what he feared was that there might be no limits.'

    Read this NOW!

This is one of my favorite books of all time. Every sentence, every paragraph is rich and beautiful. I recently heard that this book is being made into a movie. I would definitely read the book first. I only hope the movie does the book justice. (following the example of 'A River Run Through It.')

Austere Beauty: A Deserved Winner of the Nat.

Like both the Great Plains and the vast expanse of the southwestern desert, ALL THE PRETTY HORSES, possesses an austere beauty that deserves accolades. The tale is simple, the characters stark, honest, bold. Each tribulation is met as though the characters were parts of the very terrain they traverse. McCarthy demands of his reader a stripped down approach to the most primordial of emotions: love, despair, guilt. It is his ability to create characters that personify the very landscapes he chooses to paint that makes him one of the more profound modern American authors.

    Wildest West

An engrossing novel that proves strength resides in character, regardless of genere. McMurtry proved it with Lonesome Dove as Eastwood did with Unforgiven: the Western need not resort to token gun play to be effective. The violence in this book is sudden and brutal and serves to strengthen the characters, not to titilate the reader. It is hard to find more believable young characters in literature as the ones in this novel. Fine reading.

    Delicious Reading

Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses is beautifully written. McCarthy is somehow able to take the reader away to the American southwest and make him a constant companion of John Grady Cole; not a spectator but a companion. McCarthy's description of broad sweeping landscapes and genuine characters is phenomenal.
