Funniest book in years. Great for these times.
What a joy to encounter radio's only humorist, the legendary Fred Allen, in this wonderful book of his writings. The section titled 'Allen's Aphorisms' alone is filled with more pungent observations and laughter than the contents of virtually all so-called books of humor. Example: 'All the sincerity in Hollywood you could stuff into a flea's navel and still have room left over to conceal 8 carraway seeds and an agent's heart.' Using the film capital as a metaphor, he sticks a satirical dart into our rampant materialism while still making us laugh at ourselves. This is the mark of a true humorist, which is what Fred Allen is - right up there in the pantheon with Mark Twain, Ring Lardner and James Thurber. Thurber himself said, 'You can count on the thumb of one hand the American who is at once a comedian, a satirist, a wit and a humorist and his name is Fred Allen.' If you like Thurber, you will love Fred Allen. Boy, in these tough times, if you're looking to cheer up your family, friends or colleagues, this is the perfect Christmas gift. Or a gift for any time. And it has on the cover a caricature of Fred Allen by the great Al Hirschfeld. PerfeWas this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
