Honestly Great Recipes!
Having been recently diagnosed with food allergies, I was miserable at the prospect of giving up desserts and pastries. I bought this book to try a couple of recipes and seven recipes in, I've been thrilled with each. I was skeptical at first after several failed allergy-free recipes from other sources, but Elizabeth Gordon's recipes are delicious by any standards, especially being allergy-free!
The recipes are relatively simple to anyone familiar with the basics of baking and the author throws in a wealth of knowledge in random baking tips. Not only are these tips practical, but they are artfully placed, adding context and punctuating each section with useful information. For instance, in the pie section, the author gives a really wonderful tip for rolling pie dough without it sticking to the counter-top or rolling pin that has made making pie crusts so much less of a hassle.
The ingredients are more expensive than traditional ingredients, but that comes with the territory of food allergies. The most expensive ingredient (thus far) has been xanthan gum, but each recipe usually calls for a very, very small amount of it. Keeping it in an airtight container in a dark, dry closet should ensure that it has a reasonable shelf-life. I'm also told that many of these specialty ingredients can be found for much cheaper online, so a little prep will go a long way.
It is worth noting that in many of the recipes, I found that my cook time was anywhere from 20% to 30% longer, but that's likely due to the fact that I have a gas oven. The toothpick test still applies and it hasn't been an issue for me to simply cook items a bit longer. I make sure to make note of my actual cook-time on each recipe after I've nailed it down.
My favorite so far are the brownies -- made with real espresso, these are a chocolate and coffee lover's dream!1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

Allergy-Free Yumminess!!
My 17 year-old daughter cannot tolerate dairy and she has a friend who has gluten and egg allergies. When they get together with this book, it's a crazy kitchen bake-off! So many terrific, delicious recipes I don't know where to start. Elizabeth Gordon includes a description of ingredients at the beginning of the book and all ingredients can be found at your local health food store and some can even be found in the isles of your grocery store. Don't miss this little book, it's a keeper!
