A Refreshing Secret Unveiled
Colette Omans Nicoletta pops on the Children's Literature scene with a very well written and illustrated first story - ALLISON INVESTIGATES: DOES CHOCOLATE MILK COME FROM BROWN COWS? - and it is bound to be a favorite of both parents/grandparents and children ages 4 - 8. Though the title of the book sounds funny to adults, it merely represents one of the many questions children have about life and things around them but are too often embarrassed to ask. This reader would hope that the character of ALLISON will be the featured investigator of other Big Questions for many more books by this very charming author. Allison asks her father the question of the title, and when her father answers jokingly that chocolate milk comes from brown cows, Allison's curiosity is peaked and she requests her dad to drive to a farm to find the truth! At the farm Allison and her father meet Farmer Mike who patiently explains the life of cows - what they eat, how they are milked, the different kind of cows that graze on the farm - and then invites Allison to try her hand and milking machine to watch the process, a process that goes beyond the farm to the processing plant where the milk is pasteurized and then the additives make some of it into chocolate milk. Satisfied, Allison returns home from her day of investigation only to be challenged by another dilemma: is the moon really made of cheese? Nicoletta's fine writing style keeps the story interesting while never talking down to her reader. The honesty of this approach in children' literature is refreshing as are the copious illustrations that fill all the space on every page. This is a clever, informative and entertaining new book.
