Great book!

I had no idea all of these authors were neighbors. This book is a riveting look into their personal lives and possible influences of their works. It kept my attention until the end, but there was not a lot about Louisa May Alcott. The only thing that bothered me was there were a lot of author intrusions.

For those who have visited Concord, this is a great book bringing together all the significant writers and thinkers of the 19th Century in that area. Cheever demonstrates their relationships with each other and how each writer was influenced by events in his/her life. Fascinating reading for those interested in historical events during that era in America. Excellent for understanding Transcendentalist Society in Concord.

A warm, intimate history

Susan Cheever takes us on a loving walk along side some of American Literature's most enduring artists, giving us a unique insight into the humanity at the heart of their tremendous achievements. It is Cheever's own humanity that makes this work shine. Critics who expected more, just don't get writing or writers.
