Hi, this is Jean Sasson and I'm delighted to see the first part of my memoir (AMERICAN CHICK IN SAUDI ARABIA) available on this site. B&N has always supported my books and for that I am grateful. I LOVE B&N stores and some of my most fun times are spent browsing the books and magazines. I hope readers enjoy getting to know these very three extraordinary Saudi women I met during my early years in the kingdom. My time in Saudi Arabia was so unique -- I feel lucky to have lived there in the early days when Saudi citizens were so warm and welcoming to the expatriate community. I lived there for 12 years, and this peek at my memoir is only a small sample of the very amazing people I have met on my lifelong journey of travel and getting to know so many different people in 66 countries. Thanks to all who care about the intriguing people I write about.

"A worthwhile read," from a girl who doesn't typically read non-fiction

    Pros:
an inside look into a different culture
the writer is a fascinating, spirited woman
    a quick read
    real-life stories
the epilogue point you to her other books

    Cons:
    short
based on life experiences only, not research
dated (1975) - though the epilogue does discuss modern (2012) changes or lack of

    Overall: Definately worth reading

Age Group: mature teen (discusses topics of sex but not beyond PG13 at worst).

    First installment.

My initial reaction to this 80 page, first installment of Jean Sasson's memoir is, why only 80 pages? Why has this been issued as just a sample? Personally, although I did enjoy this, I found it a bit frustrating that it was only part of a more complete book.

Jean became famous as the author of the rather shocking book, Princess. This was an insight into the hidden lives of women in Saudi Arabia, particularly the Princess known as Princess Sultana.
The first part of her recent memoir explains how she came to be working in Saudi and the origin of her mission to persuade Saudi women that they must fight for their freedoms and live a full life.
There are three wonderful characters revealed in this installment, a Bedouin woman who has had a satisfying life and has no problems about wearing the veil, an educated young mother who has married her cousin and cannot give birth to a healthy baby and a woman who's only purpose in life is to please her dominant husband.

This is not as good as my previous reads by this author and I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. It was because I had read two of her other books that I was particularly interested in her story, but I prefer her biographical works.
I particularly dislike the title which would not have attracted me if I'd seen the book on a shelf.

    Awaiting the next installment.

This was a very good book that was interesting from the beginning. It makes you realize how lucky you are to be living in the land of the free where women can do everything a man can do and doesn't have to live in a shadow of a man.

as a nurse who is trained to respect other people's culture and views; this story takes it one step further. She helps you to understand why it it's important. Our Christian culturtre is very diffrent withen itself. why can' t we respect cultures and religions diffrently?
