The recent near death experience of the American automotive indu

The recent near death experience of the American automotive industry has given plenty of material to business authors and journalists. Many have dwelled in the subject with abandon and many books and articles have been written on the subject. As it is often the case there is only a few books from this wave that are truly insightful and worthy of your time. This time around Steve Rattner's Overhaul and Bill Vlasic's One Upon a Car were the two books you would have to pick in order to obtain a comprehensive and accurate account of the economical tsunami our domestic auto makers went through from 2008 until just very recently.

That is until America Icon by Bryce G. Hoffman. American Icon centers its efforts on the unlikely and incredible recovery of the Ford Motor Company, the most iconic of all domestic automakers and how it survived its crisis without federal help. The book is rigorously researched and benefits form Hoffman's years as the Detroit News correspondent embedded within Ford. Hoffman treats its subject with respect, accuracy and objectivity and gives a very insightful account of how Alan Mulally was recruited from Boeing by Bill Ford after finally coming to the realization that he could no longer save his family legacy without help. Mulally had just performed in Boeing what was considered to be a titanic come back effort similar to what Ford needed. Were they all, including Mulally in for a big surprise!

Mulally himself is a character worthy of deep study. His efforts at Ford may be the blueprint for economic recovery efforts everywhere, no only for the results achieved which in themselves are just amazing, but also for the rigorous methodology and the eminently optimistic approach to the giant task at hand. Mulally is the poster boy for team work. He did not only fought the appalling state of affairs at Ford when he arrived, but also the worse economical crisis since the great depression, loads of skepticism and suspicion and the most corrosive corporate culture imaginable. In a recent interview Hoffman mentioned that Mulally had one more task to complete at Ford and it was to return the company to investment grade so the liens over the company assets are finally lifted. I believe there is one more, or at least should be, and that is to make sure than the changes he achieved in Ford's corporate culture are lasting.

I you only want or can read only one book about the current state of affairs in America's auto industry American Icon is the one you just can't miss. So don't.

This was one of most enjoyable books I have read lately. Explain

This was one of most enjoyable books I have read lately. Explains many behind the scenes happenings on Ford's recovery. It was not possible without Bill Ford recognizing he need help in managing his family's company. He then also picked the best CEO for the job, Alan Mulnally, who really was worth every penny they paid him.
