This author had an ax to grind against this President. If you are a fan of Johnson's, I suggest you read the AJ biography by Hans Trefousse, instead. Even the present author cites to the Trefousse book throughout her book, because Trefousse was the Johnson expert. Unfortunately he's dead now, or else it would have been nice if he had written this volume of the Presidents series. Also, he was less judgmental about Johnson. At least two inaccuracies in the present work: 1. The name is John Hunt Morgan (not John M. Hunt-p. 71) and 2. Booth was a Marylander, not a Virginian (p. 89). It would have been nice if the editor had caught these. I now wonder how many more of the present author's "facts" were wrong. This author also wrote about Jefferson's affair with his slave Sally Hemings. Slave/Master sexual relationships seem to be a specialty here. Johnson is accused of buying a slave for sex, as well. The author, without support also accuses Johnson of being illegitimate and of having a wayward Mother. No holds barred here. Its a shame that for some readers this volume of hatred will be the only book they read on Johnson. As I said before, please read Trefousse instead.

The American Presidents Series attempts to offer concise biographies of the Presidents. This one was well written and emphasized what a disaster Johson was to Reconstuction. An overlooked man who helped set back the cause of Civil Rights for Generations. I wonder why Lincoln gets a pass for foisting this man on the North?
