A friend of mine had this book on her shelf and when I saw it I was enchanted. The art is almost meditative in its simplicity. The artist's ingeneuity and patience are as impressive as his eye for unusual beauty. One photo is of a sphere of ice shards from a creek and the caption describes how he held each piece in place as he dripped water on the joins to 'weld' them together. Another shows a pebble beach after rain with a man-shaped dry spot - he created that image using his own body as a stencil, lying still for hours in a light rain. This book is beautiful, surprising, unique, delightful and a little bit odd, in a good way. The professional critics quoted above use words like 'simulationist' and 'delicate tensions' but its not just for artsy snobs. The artist's notes are simple and clear, revealing a lot about his motivation and his methods. Art students, nature lovers, anyone who is 'visually oriented' or just is looking for a neat coffee table book will love this one.
