    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    BORING!

I'm not even sure where to begin my criticism of this novel. Marked as one of the greatest pieces of literature, Anna Karenina fell far short in my expectations. The story was about 200 pages too long. The characters were empty and shallow and conceited. I couldn't relate to any of the people that I was probably supposed to like. This book is a soap opera of the worst kind and really brings a downer to the joy of reading. That being said, if you absolutely must read this book (for a class or a book club), do yourself a favor and get the cliff notes. You can then move on to reading something much more enjoyable.

    VERY DISAPPOINTED

I have reached the mid-point of this novel, and I am so disappointed that I am not sure that I will finish it. Presented as one of the greatest love stories ever written, I fail to see the passion between Anna and Vronsky. They come off as flat and stiff. Also, I am so bored with the farming portions that I want to kill a plant just to rid myself of the frustration. Levin's holier than though attitude about Kitty and her refusal of his marriage proposal just shows how one dimensional the characters in this book are. I have not yet made the connection between the Anna and Vronsky story and the Levin and Kitty story. I am sure that I will find out on page 810. Also, having to look at the endnotes is very tedious. In any event, I do not recommend Anna Karenina.

    Dissapointing, boring, waste of time

I am in two book clubs and I read books when it's NOT book club time. Out of all the wonderful books out there, our book club picked this. Absolutely the biggest waste of time! It wasn't the size that scared me, but it was so 'dry'. No feeling, no emotions what so ever! So boring, it would put me to sleep. From the very beginning, I felt like it was a very shallow & blah-blah-blah book.....There wasn't a character that I really cared about, except Anna Karenina. ONLY because that is what the title of the book is! The best love-affair ever written, no way! It might have been a scandelous book back in the day, but a total bore. And Levin talking and talking about farming, politics & his religious believes - it was so ridiculous. What got me was Tolstoy would write what the characters are thinking. But when he put in the book what Levin's dog was thinking, I just about threw the book away! Tolstoy NEVER could express emotions in his way of writting on any of these characters. Someone tell me what the big deal is.

Why did I decide to read this?

When I made the decision to read this book I hoped that in the end the time I'd invested in it would feel worthwhile. Well, unfortunately it was time wasted. This book just got worse the further I got to the end. Anna's character ended up to be a woman who I couldn't possibly feel for. Her character was too 'flat' to hold my attention. Her mood swings and constant complaining were beyond irritating. She lacked 'real' strength that would have made her an interesting character. Honestly, I couldn't make it through the last 100 pages of this book. I scanned over the pages quickly just to be done with it...and that's sad considering it's a pretty large book and I'd invested a lot of time on it. Don't bother.

It was too boring so I gave up

This book was not fast paced enough for me to keep reading through. Also I found that the charachters names in the book were way to long and it was distracting to have to look back to figure out who was who. It had a good theme but I got bored to fast.

    not great

The plot is interesting, but the story drags on and on. I don't think I'd recommend it to younger people such as myself, besides there are so many pages on politics that I could not help but skip! The Russian names get really confusing, they all sound the same. You stop sympathysing with the characters at the end, because the book takes so long to end! It was the first book I read from Oprah's book club and I doubt that I'll be reading any more of those!
