Another outstanding Burke novel

I won't bore you with a plot synopsis, the professionals have already filled you in. The book moves well, the dialog is crisp and believable. The mystery is confronted and solved in typical Burke fashion. A very satisfying read. If you already read Vachss, this will be a fine addition to your library. If you've just discovered Vachss, then I envy you the joy of reading his many novels. In short, don't be a chump, secure yourself a copy.

    Disappointing

I've enjoyed this series over the years, and was intrigued by the statement that this was going to be the end of it. All I can say is that it's going out with a whimper instead of a bang. The characters that have held the series together at this point just seem tired, as does the author. It starts out pretty well, maintains interest, and then starts to lose air, like a tire with a slow leak, until the whole mystery is simply solved and dealt with in the last twenty pages or so. It's as if the author fulfilled his contract to write a minimum number of pages, did so, and then wrapped things up as quickly as possible.

My copy has already gone to Goodwill.

another excellent "Burke" book by andrew vachss...and hopefully not the last

I am a huge fan of the Burke series....I was introduced to it suprisingly by my mother....It is billed as the last of the series, I certainly hope not as in this sea of mediocrity and cookie cutter series of heroes there are very few quality standouts......... not only in style but in the writing, originality, and quality of keeping ones interest......Vince Flynn, Brian Haig and Lee Child come to mind as i write this ......I can understand the idea of staying too long....sports figures come to mind when i say that.....Joe Namath, Babe Ruth, Brett Farve......people who maybe stayed one or two years beyond their time ..... so if this is the the last Burke novel, thank you Mr.Vachss for your originality and for Burke and his family.....they provided me with countless hours of enjoyment and suspense in between missions....if there is another Burke novel coming in any form then I look forward to its arrival......you are an extremely gifted and talented writer and the moral of the stories are never lost upon me...

    Another Planet

Andrew Vachs must be an acquired taste. This is the first of his books that I have read, and probably the last. I do credit him with providing the reader a challenge. For the reader who can indulge him all of his idiosyncrasies the reward must be good. His rambling narrative frequently goes off on tangents where he can express his views on various subjects. But I didn't need or want to hear them. His characters are definitely interesting, but too cynical for me to want a steady diet. So, when the next book comes out, I will think twice before buying it, but I just might.

    Fitting finale

This was a satisfying ending to a series that has held my attention from the first book.
You have to be willing to walk on the dark side with Vachss, but for those who do, you can keep company with some of the more compelling characters in fiction today.
Just hope Vachss doesn't feel he's said everything he needed to via his fiction; like all great story tellers, he leaves you hoping there is more come.

    Typical Vachss

Andrew Vachss has been writing for more than 20 years. His books have a unique and distinctive, gritty style that is a pleasure to read.
His latest work, Another Life, does not disappoint.
For afficianadoes of his work or for first time buyers this is a work that can be read with pleasure and kept in the library for many re-readings.
