Argo by Antonio J. Mendez was popularized recently because of the movie with the same name.  And if I had known that the book was written AFTER the screenplay, I might not have picked it up.

Argo is the codename for the 1970's rescue of 6 American embassy workers who were taken hostage but escaped from the Iranians.

In order to rescue the Americans, the CIA and the Canadian government worked together to create the falsified story of a movie crew coming to Iran to film their new movie Argo.

The concept is really interesting, and so were parts of the book.  But I felt bogged down by a lot of other CIA information that I didn't always want to know about.

However, I thought this was pretty cool:

When Antonio Mendez has his first job in the CIA as an artist-validator trying to forge passport documentation, it was his job "to study these stamps to look for irregularities and traps.  They could be anything from a slightly faded letter to the color of the ink.  I remember one country specifically used cheap staples that rusted easily.  If they examined the visa and didn't see this rust on the staple, then they would know that something was not right." (p. 214).

    Um. . . cool!!!!

I wasn't blown away by Argo the book.  But I am looking forward to Argo the movie (which I can now see since I read the book), because I could see how it could potentially be more exciting than the book.

    Thoughts?  Seen it?  Read it?

    Thanks for reading,
