I first read this book when I was a teenager. I have read it probably 6 times in all. I love the story. I think this book is probably a young adult to a degree and not just because the Hero is a teenager. I can say I have read this book as an adult with my own kids.My husband and both my kids have also read it. We are all fans of post-apocalyptic stories. I think the author did a really good job of conveying the emotions between Pete and Ariel. I was moved. More than once found myself tearing up there at the end of the tale. Great job. I don't read a story and judge it on how accurate the details may be. It's a story. As far as I'm concerned the author is at liberty to do whatever he/she wants with that story. If it is interesting and people enjoy it then the goal has been reached. If I'm reading an historical fiction, then I would expect more research/accuracy of detail. Not a "Tolkien" and I'm glad. There is such a thing as too much information/detail. The only reason I haven't read Elegy Beach is I'm afraid I wont love it as much as Ariel.

Not a Fantasy Fan But This Was Great

I have to say that I hate fantasy. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Haven't even read any Tolkien because, well, I hate fantasy.

That said, I sat down and started reading this because a friend told me this was the book for someone who hates fantasy, but would like a good read. And he was right. The book grabbed me from the start, and held my attention all the way to the end. While I wasn't too happy with the ending, it was consistent and correct for the book.

Go ahead. Buy it and read it.
