Phileas Fogg is an English gentleman who lives by his watch. While at the Reform Club one day, he agrees on a bet with his colleagues. If Phileas can travel around the world in eighty days, he will gain 20,000 pounds, but otherwise, he looses 20,000 pounds. He embarks on the journey the same evening with his servant Jean Passapartout. Together they travel to exotic places and end up in many situations that can stop him from completing his quest. In the year 1872, traveling around the world in eighty days was thought to be impossible. Phileas Fogg hoped to prove everybody wrong. After his departure toward his first stop in Bombay, India, a bank in London is robbed. Scotland Yard suspects Phileas as the man who fits the description. Detective Fix pursues Phileas around the world, stopping at nothing to get his man. In India, Phileas and Passapartout were waiting for a few days for a boat to come to take them to Hong Kong, when Phileas decides to go on a tour of the jungle. During this tour, he runs across a tribe making a human sacrifice. Performing a daring rescue, he saves a woman named Aouda, who turns out to be a princess. Willingly, she joins the pair making the trip, but Detective Fix catches up to them in Hong Kong. Will Phileas and the gang be able to travel the globe before the deadline? This novel will take you on an adventure with a suspenseful ending. Having read previous novels Jules Verne has written, this book is in a class all in its own. Aside from all of the inventions Verne often writes about, this book captures the essence of the time period. Using modern day (modern when written) transportation, this novel is full of adventures and twists as the story unwinds. I liked this novel because of the description used and suspense in each voyage. I would recommend this novel to anybody that likes other novels by Jules Verne, action/adventure novels, or suspenseful books. This is a book that you won¿t want to put down until you¿ve finished it.
