    Like doves with wings

In the novel Arrange Marriage the novelist Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni depicts the continuation and existence of women suffrage in the Indian culture. Arrange Marriage is a collection of stories about Indian women as heroines who live their lives in "half light and half darkness." They dream a life of their own; however, they struggle to bring down the barriors of old traditions, societal expectations, and family obligations.

    Highly Recommended

As a first generation Indian-American this book enabled me to reconnect with my Indian heritage. The stories gave voice to the silent struggles between parents and children, husbands and wives, American and Indian cultures. Although some friends did not like the 'simple' language of the book, I felt that Banerjee's straightforward words served as a vehicle through which she was able to create deep, profound, and well-crafted stories.

    Excellent

As an English language teacher of newly arrived immigrants, "Arranged Marriage" resonated deeply. Although Banerjee focuses on South East Asians, many of her depictions aptly apply to 21st century immigrants across cultures and as well as to marital adjustment in general. It truly deserves a five star rating.

    Excellently crafted!

Reading Arranged Marriage (the first time) was like opening a door into my soul. Beautifully written - each tale brings a new perspective on life in the US for South Asians. The characters come alive through the richness of description woven throughout each story. Highly recommended!
