    One of the Best

This guide along with Beryl Bender Birch's series are perhaps the Mercedes of Yoga books. Both are full of content and information on asanas (incl. variations), meditation, and more. David gets great points for being user friendly with a great spine which lies flat on the floor and you dont have to worry about the pages flipping while you move through your practice pages. This is one of my most cherished books in my yoga collection and I have many. You can never gain vital information and learn from many of these Yogis.

    A treasured tool

I have purchased several ashtanga yoga books since I started practicing at home. This book gets five stars for being user friendly, especially during practice. Each asana is described in detail, with variations to fit your level, also at the end of the book is just photos of the series. There are also modified time versions for those who are not able to do the full primary and intermediate series )i.e 15 minutes, 30 mintes, etc..) What is truly beneficial is you never have to worry about the pages flipping, as this book is wired bound. A great book, that you will get great mileage out of. David Swenson's passion for Ashtanga Yoga really shines through, and is inviting to the practioneer, and not intimadating.

    Excellent Guide to Ashtanga

This book is very well thought-out. Unlike most books, it has a spiral binding inside a hardcover so you can lay it flat on the floor while you work. The writing style is friendly and light, the asanas are described and pictured in detail, and there's a separate section of just photos. The book contains the primary, advanced, and short forms, and it's a great companion to the videos. Anyone interested in the challenging Ashtanga style should get this book!

    Excellent Ashtanga Manual

I love this book. The spiral binding makes it easy to have open in front of your mat. The text is humorous and a pleasure to read. This book is great for a beginner as well as the pro because it shows the true posture and a few modifications. You can grow in your practice with this book. I have another Ashtanga manual but I prefer the Swensen manual.

GREAT Book for anyone wanting to know more about the Asana practice of Yoga.

Clear and concise. Great illustrations and instructions on each pose. This book caters to the more advanced practictioner; however it is also suitable for those starting out who need some guidance on how to enter a pose or which sequence of poses they should use to compliment that pose. Even if you are not looking to further your yoga practice, this book is very inspiring for those that simply want to learn about yoga postures. Don't expect to do some of the more binding or strengthier poses if you are just starting out. I think this is one of the best books out there to deepen your practice. It isn't one of those touchy/feely/spiritual based books; just simply instructional and educational. Swenson himself is simply-- inspirational.

    more from this reviewer

    Perfect

This is the perfect guide for your home practice. I have attended a few Ashtanga workshops, but I needed the guide to help me continue at home. With enough practice, I will have everything memorized, but until then I will use this daily.

My favorite yoga book to date

I have been eyeing this book for years, and thought I wish they could put it into a format that I could lay open and do my practice. Well here it is, it is perfect, it is great for beginners because he explains everything. I would recommend this book for novice to expect.
