The Assassin's Creed saga is a story with impressive scope and depth and I have enjoyed playing the games as much for the story as the gameplay. I was hoping in this book to re-live a little of the fun of the game and pick up on aspects of the story that moved by quickly during the course of the game. Unfortunately the writing itself got in the way of the story. Let's start with the formatting of the book. Instead of the familiar practice of indenting paragraphs and quotations, everything starts evenly at the left margin. This makes for a confusing reading experience if you're expecting the indentations. The author also has problems with delivering dialogue that is believable and has a real problem with the sheer amount of material. The book comes in at over 300 pages, yet feels rushed throughout. Portions that cry for detailed exchanges are instead told quickly in an effort just to get from point a to point b. There is the proverbial 10 pounds of dirt in a 5 pound bag in this book -- there is simply too much source material for a book this size. Perhaps if the book had been another hundred or so pages longer it would have given the author the space needed to fully realize the story in an emgaging manner. But then we also might have another hundred pages of so-so dialogue. For players of the game, be warned that all of the story surrounding the present day aspect of Assassin's Creed is completely ignored except for a tiny part near the end. Instead this focuses solely on the exploits of Ezio. This is not a bad thing, but jist a bit of fair warning. All in all, I had hoped for a better book. The visuals of the game are so lush, the action so intense, the in-game dialogue so fitting and the story so riveting that I thought a novelization would be a perfect complement. Instead we have a book that races through much of it in order just to get to the end.
