I really enjoyed this read. I went through it very fast, because I couldn't put it down. Being the first novel that Amy Raby has put out, I know her books are only going to get better from here.

Loved this book. It says it's the first in the series, but I think it should be second. This book had realistic issues for the main characters. I loved how well they worked together and how good they were for each other. I highly recommend this author and I can't wait to read more of her work.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The story is interesting and the war strategy is phenomenal. The author did an amazing job of that. I loved how she wove that into the storyline. I wished the romance was a little stronger – only my preference. The world building was amazing. I love the addition of the different magic. It was very well done. I would like to see more of that, too.

Vitala is not a total kick-ass heroine but she’s strong. For an assassin, I wished she had been more of a kick-ass but I liked her character. She was flawed enough to make me keep reading to see if the problems between her and Lucien could be worked out.

Lucien is a wonderful hero. He’s smart, sexy and witty. He also has a wooden leg which the author wrote into the story VERY well. I even loved the dog!

I will be looking for the next book in the series – Rhianne’s story. I’m also hoping there will be a story with Celeste in the future. This was great writing and great storytelling all the way around.

The tale that Amy weaves is spellbinding. She immerses the reader in this highly detailed and unique war-ridden world full of magic, wonder, intrigue, and love despite the obstacles and differences. The intricacy she puts into creating this imagery for us is seriously commendable and unlike anything I’ve seen from a writer in a long time. The love is imperfect and all the more valuable for it. The protagonist, Vitala, has lived through some very powerful situations that have shaped her actions and speech in the story. The fact that Amy was able to capture that and set the characters apart with discernible characteristics is amazing. This romance, has enough elements to attract a different type of reader audience. For example, those that like more action and plot development in their story versus a constantly hot and heavy romance whose plot may not be as much a priority. Its potential is vast and Amy did a great job conveying that to us as her readers. Lucien is special in his own way and quite the personality. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I’d recommend it to anyone needing a little action in their life.

I am totally blown away by the fantasy world Amy Raby has created. Before my eyes, as I read I could see the world unfold from the opulence of the emperor’s castle to the dark confines of the caves of the Obsidian Circle. From scene to scene, I followed Vitala, the chosen one to assassinate the emperor. Her goal the freedom of her country never changed throughout, but the methods changed as the game changed. A game of intrigue, war, and love were all masterfully woven in the span of a very long reading day. I could not put this book down. I absolutely loved the imagery and the depth of the characters’ personalities that were developed in this book. I had no idea that this was a debut novel, it is a masterpiece!
