A Wonderful Way to End a Series

Yes, this book is about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Yes, this book is about black history. But, more important, this book is about American history--warts and all. Once again Taylor Branch takes us deep into events we have all lived through or learned about in history classes. But, he does more than that. He gives us the background, the nuances, and the sources. He also introduces us to events and people that might not be as familiar to us as Dr. King and the others. That doesn't mean they are not as important, and Branch's writing gives them their due. Taylor Branch's incredible list of notes gives scholars and those interested in learning more the opportunity to do so. But, one should not be turned off by thinking that this is a scholarly book. Although it is, the text is accessible to most readers.

Living History

Having lived through the era, having minimally participated I found this book entralling. It was like reliving history. It makes the times come alive and reminds us of where we were. For the younger generation it presents in a living, readable manner what was, not only the facts and figures but the emotions, the terrors, the anger. So well written, so readable.
