To be upfront about this review, I need to acknowledge that I am a
friend of the editor. This book is a wonderful group of essays that
reveals the humanity and wisdom of people who are atheists. The authors
each describe his or her philosophical journey that began with an
unbelief in a supernatural being or ended up at that point. A book like
this has been needed for a long time as it clears up much of the
received myths about what it means to be an atheist. It demonstrates
that atheists are all different kinds of people and they came to atheism
by different paths. As more atheists come out to their neighbors, family
and friends, our culture will have a better understanding of atheism and
its diversity. The book explores the personal stories of young and old
and exhibits lives well lived, human feelings, moral substance,
commitment to justice, and the issues that made atheism the obvious
choice for the authors. Anybody who thinks they understand atheism may
be surprisingly informed by this book.
