    Empowerment for the People

Kiernan has taken ideas set forth by our founding fathers and discovered examples of Authentic Patriots whose work he highlights with exquisite storytelling and inspiring journalism.
When the average American is pointing the finger at government or the market or 'the other guy' on whom to blame our nation's struggles, some of the country's finest are finding solutions to enormous societal problems. Individuals are highlighted in "Authentic Patriotism" who have made universal healthcare a reality in 78 communities around the country, addressed and are beginning to rectify deep faults in the criminal justice system, brought music to combat racial inequities and prejudice, improved environmental policy, and so many, many more.
In almost all instances, these stories of enormous impact begin with the idea of a single person who saw a problem and refused to allow it to continue in a country that is founded on equality, justice, and in the spirit of 'e pluribus unum'.
Individuals can make a difference and Kiernan shows us how it is happening throughout the nation and the incredible postitive impact these efforts are making.
This book should be a textbook for all service learning organizations and programs, and a tool of empowerment for those who may feel less than optimistic about their ability to make a difference. Kiernan suggests: If we all give just 3 hours a week to someone or an organization whose mission we believe in, imagine what an amazing impact we can all have. Every drop in the bucket counts. Like all the people in this book, it isn't hard to heal our nation if we step up and become Authentic Patriots. We can all be one.
