an obsolete translation of an extraordinary book

This translation of the French original of St. Therese's manuscripts by John Beevers, first published about 1963, has been obsolete since 1976. In 1973 the first critical edition of Therese's manuscript, "Histoire d'une Ame," appeared in French. The translation of that critical edition by Fr. John Clarke, OCD published by ICS Publications in 1976 is universally acknowledged as the only authoritative English translation. The third American edition in 1997 includes an updated bibliography of St. Therese.. John Beevers, a British layman, was most devoted to St. Therese, and long ago in two other books introduced many English-speaking readers to her. His translation of Therese's manuscript will interest scholars studying the history of the cult of St. Therese. For the general reader, this translation has been obsolete for twenty-six years. It is to be regretted that Image Books, which has contributed so much fine Catholic literature, continues to circulate this translation, especially when the best-sellling Clarke translation is readily available. They would do better to sponsor translations of the many fine French books about St. Therese which have not yet appeared in English. "Story of a Soul" is a life-changing book, in which St. Therese shares "my thoughts about the graces God has granted me," traces the genesis of her "way of confidence and love," and tells the story of her life with her family and in the community of Carmelite nuns. Do read the Clarke translation.

    Accessible Holiness

The popularity of this simple and profound saint and of her autobiography has been a truly remarkable happening in twentieth century Roman Catholic spirituality. It is as if God, through St. Therese, has stripped down the pursuit of Christian holiness to its bare bones, so that all might hope to arrive at its heights. This translation is very readable for contemporary times. Many (including myself) have found this volume one of those classics that can be read again and again to great profit in the process of conversion. If this is a book with which you are unfamiliar, I cannot recommend it strongly enough. On the other hand, maybe you already own a copy but have simply worn yours out as I have...

    Interesting

I did not think this was the great spiritual classic that it is touted to be. However, it was an interesting read.
