AVOID the "Revised" editions of Babar!! After having checked the 2003 edition of this book out of the library, we were not pleased upon buying this version to learn that "Revised" really means "dumbed down." The text has been condensed for quicker and easier reading, and concepts and events have been altered for the worse. In one of the most glaring "revisions," previously Babar's family left the other planet because they were getting dirty looks on account of an accident they caused. That shows that misunderstandings sometimes happen when you meet new people, and that not everyone will become your best friend. Now, instead, Babar and company leave on a flimsy, "feel-good" excuse that ensures nobody's feelings could possibly have been hurt. Yes, it's almost certain that kids today have shorter attention spans than they once did. Maybe they even are "dumber" and more insulated from the real world. But regardless of whether those things are true or not, shame on this publisher (or whomever is responsible for this misguided "revision") for acting on those reduced expectations by dumbing down a good book. Assuming that this is not the only Babar title that the publisher has decided to mangle, I recommend that anyone who has previously read and enjoyed a Babar book avoid these "Revised" editions and instead opt to find used copies of the out-of-print ones. Four stars for the original; a generous two for this inferior edition.
