Baby Sign Language flash cards are fabulous!

We were looking to expand on the few signs we had been teaching our year old granddaughter (well, ok, mostly their parents were, but we were helping too!) and I bought these online, choosing by the description given. As it happens, these cards are just about the baby's favorite thing, and she has learned a great many of the signs. Most especially she is enjoying just using them all spread out in front of her and finding the one she is prompted for. It was awesome realizing she was signing the word for cheese (learned from these cards) when I was giving her lunch one day, and that she used it to tell me what in particular she wanted from the food choices on the table. (Not to mention actually standing at the door to the family bathroom and signing the word for potty furiously, the actually ummm following through? on the reason for her demand. Brilliant baby!) I think every single baby ought to be taught these basic signs. It is amazing what they can tell you when they are still pre-verbal. The photographs and explanations of the signs are very clear, giving a reason for why the movements should stand for the items and also explaining when certain among them are simplified versions of standard ASL. As a bonus, the sign for please is WAY easier than saying the word and is a joy to have her using so young! My only real complaint is that 50 is nowhere near enough signs, so now I am scouting out more.

Bought another set as a gift

I bought these for myself several years ago, and just bought them again as a gift. They were good for teaching my child to associate the spoken word with the object as well as for introducing the signs. The cards do a good job of covering the basics -- we actually used just about all of the signs with my daughter.

Be forewarned that the card for "milk" has two photos -- one of a bottle and one of a nursing infant. That was great for us, but some might think the nursing photo shows a bit too much.

    Buy this!

My 16 month old can't get enough of these cards. She will literally have a fit if you try to put them away before she is ready. The pictures are great and captivate the babies interest easily. A great gift for parents.
